Ever since seeing the Kokeshi Doll exhibit that ran at the Subtext Gallery, I knew I had to create my own. I ordered 2 blanks from Christina Conway, the curator for the show. The egg body ended up being too big in proportion to the head for my character based on the illustration I already did titled, "An Orange Is Always Good In A Pinch". So I cut a smaller ball and he looked the way I wanted him to. I plan on doing a different character using the egg body supplied.

pocza and mike - The back of his head was empty and I felt like the pinwheely art was getting too much. So I thought, what could be more simple and fun than a bunch of bright green water bugs? I'm glad you like.
christina - wow! The seal of approval from the queen of the Kokeshi Dolls. I'm stoked that you like him. And I'm glad you didn't mind me taking liberties with the body.

Hey Pati - thanks. No, I think the contributors are set for the current show. Maybe a future one. That would be cool with me.

Hey Jim! This guy looks so great! I'm thinking about organizing a show here where I get a bunch of artists to paint blank Russian nesting dolls.If i actually get a gallery to go for this, i'd love to invite you to do one set of nesting dolls. I bet you'd come up with something great. Anyway, it's just an idea, but I will let you know if this actually goes through. Half my ideas make it with galleries for group show concepts.

Jim, I have been enjoying your work on SFG, but this is my first visit to your site. Your stuff is all wonderful, and this guy here is SO fantastic. I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and I see others have called him "creepy" but to me he's downright charming...
I absolutely love your doll! Hope you were able to come out here to San Diego to view it...it was amazing!

Hey doni - thanks. If I came out there, I wouldn't have been able to see him because he wasn't in the show. I didn't know about the show or Kokeshis until they started showing up on some artist friends websites. I bought the blanks from the curator, Christina. She liked what I did with mine but it was too late. It's good. He will find a place in this world. I agree that he isn't creepy. He's just a fancy schmancy little pretty boy skull guy.
