AGM's Pumpkin Carving Contest

Vote for Jim over at Anna Goodson's Pumpkin Carving Contest. Voting ends on October 31, 2009. No sign up. Just rate this from 1-10 by clicking on the pumpkin icons under the photo. Easy, right?

This is based on an illustration I did about a little dead juggling skull guy who is so nervous performing at his first day of the dead gig that he misplaces one of his juggling skulls and has to sub in an orange. Thus the title of the illustration, "An Orange is Always Good in a Pinch".

I am messing around a lot with vectors lately. I also want to do more people so I can develop the illustration side of me. I will never get tired of doing creatures and animals though.

New Vector Characters

Here is a tree trunk character that's been showing up in my moleskine lately. I started it in Illustrator and then headed in to Photoshop for texture.

This just spilled out of my head. Even I don't know what makes me tick sometimes.

Treebot

detail

7x7 Acrylic and pencil on coldpress board.

I have been so busy for months working up concepts, sketches and more on a huge project that I haven't been able to do any personal work. This felt good to do and represents a direction I have been thinking a lot about.

Moleskine Madness

I love taking a blank page and watching it evolve in front of my eyes. I could doodle for hours. It never gets old to me.

Canadian TV Commercials

[-P;-0

I was commissioned to do art for a Canadian TV channel called VRAK.tv aimed at teens. They took my art and mapped it unto the walls, floors and ceilings. They told me what they wanted but I did'nt know how it was going to turn out. I love what they did.

George Herriman rules!

One of my favorite strips from Krazy Kat. I always loved the mood and the way he laid the page out. This led to the walking pumpkin on my Kokeshi custom.

Ignatz mouse was on his way to scare Krazy Kat. I love Herriman's walking pumpkin so I put him on this halloween themed Kokeshi doll and just made the scene go the way Jim saw it.

Custom Pumpkin Kokeshi Doll

What pumpkin wouldn't want a multi-headed slimy green snake, slithering around it hollow head? Happy times.
I've had this here blank kokeshi doll for too long and it was about time I painted it. I love doing halloween themed stuff and it is the season so... The bottom scene was influenced by one of my cartoon heroes, George Herriman. The man was a genius. His Krazy Kat cartoon, created back in the 1920s was way ahead of its time. Really great art, writing and design. I draw a lot of my characters with stick arms and legs thanks to the look of George's brick throwing mouse, Ignatz. Man, I hope Mr. Herriman is looking down and smiling. I will upload a scan of the strip that influenced the walking pumpkin scene in the next day or so.

Rampage of the Giant Melon

A sketch for your viewing pleasure. Someone or something sliced and bit one of Giantmelon's kin. He's so upset, he could spit seeds and trample a town or two.

Photoshop, Painter and Illustrator.

I've been almost no computer for about a year, concentrating mostly on gallery work. But I must admit, I miss the computer kinda the way I missed working with real media last year at this time.

2 New Wood Plaques

What a great weekend. I have been immersed in my kitchen project for so long I thought I was never going to get back to painting. Therapy indeed.

"The Bubblebees Spoil the Lollytree Chomper's Surprise Visit"

FOR SALE
Mixed media on wood.

The lollytrees sway happily in the lemony winds. They can grow tall, juicy and sweet, thanks to the vigilance of the ever protective bubblebees. This hungry, startled chomper is going to have to be a lot sneakier if he wants to partake of the plump sweets found in the very desirable country of Hills-so-pink.
Another piece for the Small Works show at Fusion Gallery in south Jersey. The opening reception is Aug. 9th, 6:00-10:00 pm. If you are in the area, it would be fun to meet some of you guys.

The Bubblebees Are No Cause For Concern

SOLD!
Can you tell that I like painting on computer disks? This is a 1.2mb floppy disk. Here is some more info on the small works show this and other pieces will be in this summer. It is at Fusion Gallery, located in Collingswood, a town in south Jersey. The opening reception will be August 9th, 6-10pm. I still have a couple of ideas that I want to pull off before my submission deadline. I heard that there will be a good amount of artists because we will be taking up much less wall space. Sounds like lots of fun. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. Hey my friends, it's not too late to submit. Deadline is June 30th. See site for details.

The Unit-3 Flower Tasters Hard at Work

This was going to be just vector art printed, cut and pasted on to a painted board and then collaged with other elements but I got in photoshop and couldn't pull out until it was finished. Now I can't imagine it looking better if I did my plan A. Maybe I'll try it anyway.

My first 2 plushies.

The top one is painted white muslin. The bottom one is straight up material. Both are hand stitched. Can't wait to learn how to use a sewing machine. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever say that. The face is 4 buttons and a rusty washer I found on a walk in my neighborhood. I thought the washer was so cool that I went to Home Depot and bought bags of different sizes and put them out in my back yard to rust up. Hot dang I love rust!

Even Baby Octo-Bots Need Sleep

SOLD
This is an old Zip disk. Amazing how fast this became low tech. 100mb used to be huge. But old computer disks are great objects to paint on.

After a full week of non-stop stuffed baby octo harvesting, the bots get confused and tangled up in their work. This guy needs an ice cold bottle of 5w-30 and a few hours in the Z-pod.
